Impure

June, a twelve year old girl in Kenya, gets her first period in class. Unaware of what is happening and called "dirty," she is sent home in disgrace. Fearing she has a contagious disease, she runs away in shame. Her mother finds her and lovingly explains that she is not impure but is becoming a woman. The story highlights the damaging effects of period shaming and the importance of education and breaking societal taboos around menstruation.
