In 1850, the quiet, devout lives of the Wentworth family near Boston are upended by their European cousins, Baroness Eugenia and her artist brother, Felix. While Felix falls for the repressed Gertrude, the worldly Eugenia, fleeing a dissolved marriage, seeks a new fortune by charming the wealthy Robert Acton. The film is a dramatic clash between European worldliness and American puritanism, exploring themes of love, manipulation, family, and social mores in the 19th century.
