In 17th-century England, Gwynplaine, disfigured with a perpetual grin, rescues blind Dea and is raised by Ursus. He hides his deformity, believing Dea could never love him. Encountering Duchess Josiana and caught in palace intrigue, he must choose: forsake his station for love or accept society's cruel judgment as the Man who Laughs.
