In 1793, he traveled to India with his family to spread Christianity, facing immense hardships but staying for over 40 years. Haunted by sati, the burning of widows, he relentlessly worked to end the practice. Despite overwhelming challenges, he succeeded in abolishing sati and became known as the "Friend of India" and "Father of Modern Missions."
